In the vast world of Internet, everyday millions and millions of videos are uploaded. In this gigantic space, it becomes pretty difficult to recognise the origin of the video. But, with some OSINT techniques, we can try to identify the origin of the video and if we are lucky enough, we can also find out who uploaded the video! In this blog post, we’ll try to verify a video which was viral a few days ago in India.

The above video was viral claiming that Indian soldiers are mistreating Kashmiris in India. But, let’s try to debunk this claim. When we talk about video verification, it boils down to the fact that, videos can be analysed frame to frame, in other terms we are taking the frames; which are nothing but images and reverse searching them. In order to make our job simpler, i.e., to break our video into frames, we can install an addon called InVid, which is available on both Firefox and Chrome.

I uploaded the video on Invid and it gave me some frames of the video.

I picked a random frame (image) and reverse searched it via Yandex images.

As a first lead, I got a Youtube video, which was in Turkish; but on translation, I found that it was referring to atrocities on Muslims in Syria.

As the search continued, I was able to find a fact check about it from facthunt.in. As I went through their article, it lead me to one of the primary sources.

The primary source was from an article published by aljazeera.net, you can see the translated version in the third screenshot. The original video was from Syria, which was leaked by some activists, to portray the atrocities of Syrian security forces. Hence, the claim is disproved!
